Recent statistics paint a concerning picture of children’s mental health in the UK. As of 2023, approximately 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8 to 25 years have a probable mental health condition. This translates to around 5 children in every classroom experiencing mental health difficulties, a significant increase from 1 in 9 children in 2017.The demand for mental health support among children has reached unprecedented levels. According to the latest data from 2022-23, nearly one million children and young people (949,200) were referred to Children and Young People’s Mental Health Services (CYPMHS) in England24. This staggering number represents 8% of England’s 11.9 million children2.
The Waiting List Crisis
Perhaps the most alarming statistic is the number of children left waiting for support. As of 2022-23:
- Over a quarter of a million children (270,300) are still waiting for mental health support after being referred.
- 28% of children referred to mental health services are on waiting lists.
- Nearly 40,000 children have experienced waits of over two years for support.
These long waiting times can have severe consequences on a child’s well-being and development. The average waiting time for those who do receive support is 35 days, but many children are left waiting much longer2.
The Importance of Qualified Children’s Counsellors
Children’s mental health issues require specialized care. Qualified children’s counsellors are trained to understand the unique developmental stages and challenges that children face. They possess the skills to communicate effectively with children, using age-appropriate techniques and interventions. These professionals can help children:
- Develop coping strategies for anxiety and depression
- Process traumatic experiences
- Improve social skills and relationships
- Build self-esteem and resilience
Creating a Safe Space for Children
For children to open up about their feelings and experiences, it’s crucial to provide a safe and nurturing environment. This safe space should be:
- Non-judgmental: Children need to feel accepted and understood, regardless of their thoughts or feelings.
- Confidential: Children should trust that their conversations will remain private, within the bounds of safeguarding regulations.
- Comfortable: The physical environment should be welcoming and child-friendly.
- Consistent: Regular sessions with the same counsellor can help build trust over time.
By creating this safe environment, children are more likely to express themselves freely, allowing counsellors to provide more effective support.
At Stable Minds CYP we have a dedicated Children’s Mental Health hub in Knutsford that is safe, inviting and doesn’t look or feel like a counselling room. We work the therapy to suit the child or young person and build sessions around them.
